BULLDOGS FIGHT TO FINISH: Timely hits push Gamecocks past Andalusia

The Andalusia Bulldogs (11-4) put up a strong fight, but fell 3-0 to the New Brockton Gamecocks on Friday afternoon in Andalusia.

In the top of the first inning, New Brockton’s Hunter Wallace led off the game with a double down the right-field line.

The Gamecocks then played small ball when Caleb Griffin dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Wallace to third.

Hunter Phillips then lifted a ball deep into center field for a sacrifice fly and a 1-0 Gamecocks’ lead.

The Bulldogs got a couple of chopper ground balls in the bottom of the first, but the Gamecocks retired the Andalusia batters in order.

In the top of the second inning, Andalusia starting pitcher Noah Kelley got the first two batters of the inning to fly out.

The next batter hit a sharp ground ball back up the middle of the diamond, but Bulldog shortstop Gill Morgan snagged the ball and fired to first for the final out.

Leading off the bottom of the second inning, Will Clark reached first after drawing a walk.

A wild pitch then moved Clark around to second base.

J.W. Jones drew a walk with two outs, but the Bulldogs were unable to produce a run.

Kelley struck out the first batter in the top of the third inning before a one-out single gave the Gamecocks a runner.

Wallace then popped a ball up along the first base line where Clark camped under the ball.

As the ball was coming down, Wallace collided with Clark and he was called out for runner interference.

With the next batter at the plate with a 3-2 count, Kelley picked off the runner at first to end the frame.

Andalusia looked to have something going in the bottom of the third inning when Garrett Davis and Hogan Nichols singled with two outs.

With runners on first and second, Clark came to the plate with a chance to tie the game.

Clark ripped a pitch to center field, but the Gamecocks’ fielder took a few steps straight back before leaping up to snag the line drive.

Griffin started the top of the fourth inning with a double and then came around to score on a single from Dalton Adkison.

Adkison moved up to second on the throw.

Wyatt Grice then drove in Adkins with a single to give the Gamecocks 3-0 lead.

After walking the next batter, Kelley finished the frame strong with back-to-back ground outs to third base.

Sebaskin Stallworth started the bottom of the fourth with a hard-hit ball, but it was caught by the New Brockton left fielder for the first out.

Chip Morgan then reached off of an error, but couldn’t came around to score.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nichols started the frame with a single, was erased on a fielder’s choice.

Stallworth followed with a single that looked like it would score Clark, but he Gamecocks fired the ball into the home and tagged Clark out.

New Brockton was able to hold on for a 6-3 victory.
