Dozier Senior Center has a group of very dedicated women who sew quilts that help benefit the senior center.

“They don’t have to quilt, they just do it because they genuinely love it,” Jill Williamson, the manager of the center, said.

“Some of these ladies can quilt faster and more precise than I’ve ever seen.”

The quilts are made according to order and anyone can order, Williamson said.

“The quilts take a little while to make and they all work on one quilt. Depending on the size and if you already have a quilt top done or not the price could be different,” she said.

When they do sell a quilt, the money goes towards more supplies for their quilting or whatever they want it to go to.

“The money goes mostly toward the center to purchase more quilting supplies and if they have any money left over they can choose what they want to do with it,” Williamson said.

The next big project for the group is an extra large quilt, Williamson said.

“It’s going to be absolutely gorgeous.”

Williamson says the center has a free standing quilting frame that the women gather around and quilt with.

“It’s just really amazing to watch them quilt, it’s a real bonding experience for them,” she said.

“We have such a tight knit community and people come in and kind of cheer them on as they work.”

But they don’t spend the whole day working, Williamson said.

“We try to do other things like bingo, music and we have lunch. By the time we have lunch it’s almost closing time for the center.”

Williamson says she loves the work they do.

“They’re artists. You have to know how to do this kind of thing and it’s not easy. These people know, brought up and taught how to quilt. It’s something they always loved to do.”
