The Andalusia High School Choral Department will perform several show tunes at their Spring Performance this weekend, which they are performing in honor in honor of Mrs. Paula Sue Dubelt.

Deubelt is AHS’s former chorus teacher. After retirement, she worked part time to keep the chorus active until she retired again last year.

“Mrs. Dubelt started this last year whenever I first came to help with the chorus,” Choral teacher Hannah Cross said. “So during Christmas I asked the kids what they wanted to do and they all decided to finish what she started and honor her.”

The last time that the AHS Choral Department did a musical was in 2016.

“It has been hard getting back in to the swing of things,” Cross said. “Since it has been so long since I have tried to put a production like this together, but it has been such a joy doing it.”

The group will perform tunes from several Broadway musicals including Hairspray, Chicago, Guys and Dolls, Rent and Footloose.

AHS senior Aubrey Nall will be performing “Memories” from the Broadway musical Cats as a solo.

“I remember this song from my childhood,” Nall said. “We would travel and listen to this Broadway soundtrack, so I know this play forwards and backwards.”

Nall has performed numerous times in Covington County including plays such as the King and I when Lurleen B. Wallace performed the play and in AHS’ rendition of Guys and Dolls.

Nall will be pursuing a degree in the field of forensics at LBW when she graduates in May.

Along with the solos, a quartet will sing, “Luck Be a Lady” by Frank Sinatra.

The quartet includes, Ryan Mcleod, Chris Hall, Dalton Odom and Grayson French.

“The boys wanted to do a Sinatra song since they were doing a quartet,” Cross said. “It is a really hard arrangement, but they have been doing an excellent job.”

The performance will be Fri., April 13, at 7 p.m. and Sat., April 14, at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

It will be $3 for adults, $2 for grades K-12, and free for children five and under.

The performance will be held at the Dixon Center at LBW.

“We really hope there is a good turnout,” Cross said. “It will be a great treat for everyone and the kids have worked so hard.”
