For the second-straight year, Pleasant Home’s River Baldwin has been named the Class 1A Player of the Year on Wednesday at the ASWA Player of the Year Banquet as presented by ALFA Insurance.

“It’s very exciting,” Baldwin said of receiving the award for the second time. “It shows that all of the work that I’ve put in continues to pay off.”

This was the third year that Baldwin was one of three finalists invited to the banquet.

The junior phenom had another strong year this season for the Lady Eagles.

Baldwin led the Lady Eagles with 661 total points.

She shot 64 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free-throw line.

Baldwin finished the season with 338 rebounds.

She averaged a double-double for the season with 23.6 points per game and 12.1 rebounds per game.

Shortly after receiving the award, Baldwin was also named as 1-of-35 athletes nationwide to be invited to participate in U17 USA National Team basketball trials.

“They invite 35 of the top players in the nation,” Baldwin said. “Last year, I made it down the last 18 players. This year, I want to come in prove my spot on the team.”

The team will select 12 players to compete on this summer’s World Cup Tour.

Last year as a sophomore, Baldwin made it all the way to final cuts of the U17 USA National Team basketball trials.

According to ESPN, Baldwin is the No. 32 player in the Class of 2019 and the No. 8 player at her position.

She is currently committed to Florida State University.

“I just want to thank my parents, coaches and teammates,” Baldwin said. “I want to thank all of them for pushing me, challenging me and supporting me through the whole process.”
