The Covington County Students for Safe Schools March previously scheduled for Saturday has been postponed to Wed., May 2, at 9 a.m.

“A lot of students will be participating in the ACT,” Charlotte Spurlin, director of the Andalusia High School Peer Helpers said. “So they would have not been able to attend the march and the march was made for students to raise awareness, so it would have been unfortunate for so many students to miss it.”

The weather also was expected to be a factor on the original date.

AHS Principal Daniel Shakespeare said that he wanted to hold the march on a school day so that all of the students could participate.

“So many students have their schedules completely full, so it’s hard to come up with a time for them to all meet for this event,” Spurlin said. “So Dr. Shakespeare decided to move it to a school day so the student body would have time to march.

Spurlin said that this march is non-political.

“A lot of people have the notion that this is connected to what has been going on in politics and it is not,” Spurlin said. “The students came to me wanting to do this as a show of concern about school safety and community awareness.”

The AHS Peer Helpers will open up T-shirt sales again for the event. The proceeds from the shirts will go to Operation Birthday Wish, a community service partnership with the Alabama Department of Human Resources, which provides a birthday present and book for DHR foster children in Covington County.

The shirts are $20 and are available for everyone.

The march will start at AHS at 9 a.m. and will go around the square and back to the high school. Spurlin is trying to get people to speak on mental health awareness as well.

“As a school we have a lot of concern over this matter, so we are excited to still be able to do this march,” Spurlin said.

Spurlin has also invited several county schools to participate in the march.
