Area churches combine BBQ, fellowship at annual tailgate [with gallery]

Friday’s 6th Annual Tailgate On the Square was all about salvation and unity, Pastor Daryll Calloway said, and of course, good food.
The First Baptist Church of Whatley Street has hosted the event on the square for the past six years. Friday night’s fare provided by churches who fired up grills ranged from hamburgers to wings, hotdogs to ribs, and pizza to baked beans.
“This whole thing is about how every brother and sister in Christ can obtain salvation,” Calloway said. “This event gives everyone the opportunity to be saved.”
Calloway said that the event is the one time that they can share Christ’s word.
“It is a way that we can share the message of Christ without judgment,” Calloway said.
This year there was great attendance and participation, Calloway said.
“I just really thank God for everyone coming out,” Calloway said. “It is great to see everyone listening and working together, I love it,” Calloway said.
Pastor Tremayne Benson said that this is one of the only events that brings the different churches together.
“This event is so important,” Benson said. “Unity is so important in this day and age, and seeing so many different churches come together it is wonderful.”
Tyler Ingram, pastor of Buck Creek Church, said that it is a way to lay everyone’s thoughts out in the open.
“We have a good time getting all the churches together,” Ingram said.
“It feels like we are always all huddled up in our own church on Sundays so this gives us a way to layout all the stuff that keeps us bound up.”
