The Gitty-Up-N-Go gas stations are challenging individuals and corporations to contribute to the Volunteer Florida and the Florida Disaster Fund, and will match those donations, up to $20,000.

The company made the announcement Monday.

“I was going to just donate money myself,” Owner Roy Mohon said. “But then my wife stopped me and said that we can help in a bigger way.”

Mohon said that he had a similar idea when he donated to the Andalusia Ballet.

“When the ballet had their auction, I donated $50,000,” Roy Mohon said. “But I challenged everyone to match my donation. That way we have several people donating and raising the bar on how much money we can raise.”

Mohon said that he spent yesterday emailing different companies to see if they would match his donation.

“I say that we are going to donate at least $20K,” Mohon said. “But I am willing to go deeper if other companies will match with me.”

This is not the first time that Gitty-Up-N-Go has donated after a tragedy. They rallied together after the tornado in Tuscaloosa to feed several people.

“After the tornado in Tuscaloosa we knew of a church that was feeding thousands of people,” Mohon said. “So we worked with a grocery company to get them food to help feed people.”

Mohon said that they decided to give to the Volunteer Florida and Florida Disaster Fund after a lot of research.

“We wanted to find someone who does fundraising,” Mohon said. “Because what we found is that a lot of charities don’t fundraise, so we did a lot of research to find the right one. If there are any other charities that do, we have our ears open and we will donate to them as well.”

Volunteer Florida is a non-profit organization established in 1993. Its mission is to strengthen Florida communities through national service, fostering volunteerism and leveraging resources.
