The First Baptist Church in Andalusia packed their school bus yesterday with school supplies as a way to give back to local schools.
This is the first time that the church has done this on such a big scale, Rev. Kevin Wilburn said.
“We still adopt certain families to help,” Wilburn said. “But we are trying to work with the school systems and give to the teachers to help throughout the year. We have been getting all types of school supplies today. We just thought that it would be a fun idea to get the kids involved.”
Several people have stopped by the bus on the square with donations, as well.
“If people want to give donations, then we will go buy the school supplies,” Wilburn said. “We also provided hot dogs and drinks for anyone that gave school supplies.”
Wilburn said the community has been fantastic so far.
“We are just trying to have fun and help the community out at the same time,” Wilburn said. “I think getting the word out has been the biggest challenge, but when people hear and they know, they respond. This is a great community and they love the kids and teachers. We are just happy to be a part of what is going on here.”
The goal was to fill up 50 seats of the school bus with school supplies. Last night, the church held a back to school rally on the square, as well.
