Organizers of the Extreme Experience Retreat are gearing up for the 10th year helping lower vision and blind people gain confidence out on Blue Lake.

Wanda Scroggins said there are still spots open for the retreat.

“We have about 40 to 50 people signed up as of right now,” Scroggins said. “But it is getting down to the wire on pre-registration. So, people need to go ahead and sign up.”

This year’s theme is Denim and Diamonds.

“One of the ladies from Dothan actually came up with the idea,” Scroggins said. “I always let one of the campers choose what the theme is every year.”

Over the past 10 years, Scroggins said the main thing that comes to her mind every year is the miracles that happen at the retreat.

“There are so many transformations that happen with the campers,” Scroggins said. “A sort of metamorphosis, if you will. They come in on the first day afraid, then by the time they leave it is a complete transformation.”

One thing that hasn’t changed over the past 10 years is the need for help, Scroggins said.

“The need is actually larger,” Scroggins said. “Another need that is big is the financial help. It takes a large amount of money to keep this thing going and we need sponsors. Every little bit helps.”

Scroggins said they are adding a scavenger hunt to the event list this year.

“It should be interesting to see them go through the scavenger hunt,” Scroggins said. “As always, we will have a talent show, hayride, family feast, campfire and the campers will get to sing their first Christmas carols of the year.”

The entire retreat will cost $250 and will include lodging, meals, classes and entertainment.

The camp is located at Blue Lake Camp, 8500 Oakwood Lane, Andalusia.

It will begin on Sept. 25, with room assignments beginning at 10 a.m., and the first classes beginning at 2 p.m.
