Doing laundry can be a daunting task, but an Opp woman is hoping it’s a task that can be profitable for her.

Audrey Huggins recently opened The Laundry Valet, a laundry service.

“I just graduated college a year ago, but I had been thinking about opening my own business for some time,” she said. “My stepson came to live with us last year when he was in end-stage renal failure and as his caretaker, my availability for working a job was sometimes limited.”

Huggins said her stepson recently had a kidney transplant, which freed up some of her time.

“In talking over ideas with friends about small business options, I hit upon this,” she said. “Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh laundry? As a stay-at-home mom, I do tons of laundry, and I realized I really do enjoy laundry. It’s something that most people dread when it comes up on their chore chart.”

Huggins said she took the idea of laundry and maybe housekeeping and then kept refining the idea until she found what she considers the winning combination.

“Providing laundry services with a valet approach seemed to be a perfect fit,” she said. “Who wouldn’t want to come home at the end of the day to baskets of fresh, folded and ready-to-wear laundry? The service itself is quite simple. I’ll come to you – anywhere in Opp – and pick up all your laundry. I’ll wash, dry and fold it as a standard service and then return it back to you at the end of the day. We’re currently also offering service for ironing, pet items and bed sheets and blankets.”

Huggins said there is a choice of soaps and additives as well.

“At this time we’re not available in Andalusia, but I’m hoping things go well enough in Opp that we can expand or look at doing three days a week in Opp and three days a week in Andalusia.”

Prices include $10 for the first load and $7 for each additional load.

She charges $5 each for large jackets and coats; $5 for each set of bed sheets; $7 for comforters and blankets; $5 each for duvet covers and table clothes; $7 each for dog beds; and $7 for small/queen size pillows for two.
