Last Friday, the Andalusia High School family studies II students taught a Thanksgiving lesson to their designated class at Andalusia Elementary School.

The kindergarten through third-grade students made Oreo Turkeys while the fourth and fifth-grade students made Fudge Swirl Pilgrim Hats.

The high school students also provided a little knowledge about turkeys and the history of pilgrims and Thanksgiving.

“A lot of work went into preparing for this lesson,” AHS family studies teacher Jana Clark said. “The students had to write a rough and final draft lesson plan, created a grocery list of items they would need, created a lesson example, and counted and bagged all items they would need for their class. The high school students now realize how much work it takes to plan for just one lesson, but the smiles on the AES students’ faces made it all worth it.”

Clark’s family studies class also travels to Andalusia Manor on Tuesdays and helps the activity director with many different tasks.

“The students paint the residents’ nails during ‘Primp Time,’ they visit with the residents, decorate bulletin boards, and helped pack prizes for the Andalusia Manor Fall Festival,” Clark said. “The students’ favorite activity by far was the Halloween ‘Best Practice’ where they taught the residents how to make a Halloween craft. The students absolutely love volunteering at the nursing home and have learned a lot from this volunteer experience.”
