The Lady Wildcats are set to take on Geneva High School tonight for their first game of the season.

Last year, the Wildcats had an impressive record of 21-6.

This year, head coach David Bass said they are focusing each day at getting better.

“Our team motto this year is ‘Win the day,’” Bass said. “We want to get better each day, whether it be practice or games. We really stress on having better practices and getting better each practice.”

Since the Lady Wildcats have started practices, Bass said their energy level has been high.

“I think the girls’ energy level and intensity have been through the roof,” Bass said. “They are really hungry this year.”

Tomorrow’s game for Florala will be used to see where they are at skill-wise.

“One area of our game that we really wanted to improve on from last season was limiting our turnovers,” Bass said. “We have a really high expectation for our team in that regard. Most importantly, we want to win.”

With five seniors, Bass expects each one to be leaders for the team.

“They have played on the varsity team here since they were in eighth grade,” Bass said. “I’m expecting leadership from each one of them going forward in the season.”

Last year, the Lady Wildcats fell short of an area championship losing to Pleasant Home 68-33. This year, Bass plans on making it to the area championship and winning.

“We want to have a great season,” Bass said. “But ultimately we want to win the area championship and make another postseason appearance.”

The first loss last season for the Lady Wildcats came from the eighth game of the season against Samson High School when they lost by three points 50-47.

The second loss came during the Geneva County Invitational against Geneva County 55-44.

The third loss came against Freeport by only one point 31-30.

When FHS traveled to T.R. Miller during the 17th game and lost 67-37.

The last loss before Pleasant Home was against Samson High School again 37-17.
