The Will Coleman Center will soon get some much-needed upgrades.

City of Andalusia Recreation Director Tommie Agee requested approximately $55,000 for upgrades at the center.

Among the upgrades are a new pool liner and pool filter. The pool has long been used in conjunction with Cooper Pool during the summer on a rotating basis, but issues with the pool cause some closure to the Coleman Pool last summer.

It is expected that it will cost $32,000 to purchase a new pool liner, around $8,000 to fix the mechanisms in the pool filter.

“The pool is in bad shape,” Agee said to the Andalusia City Council Tuesday evening. “We had to close it down during the summer due to the pool filter.”

Agee said the liner is also badly stained.

As for the filter, he said, the laterals are bad and it brings sand back into the pool.

The plan is to replace the laterals and other mechanisms needed to ensure the filter works properly.

Additionally, Agee requested money to purchase and install new carpet in the gym at the center.

He said it, too, is in poor shape and has a bad odor.

Agee said since he became the recreation director in 2018, he has had the carpet cleaned several times, but it’s still in bad condition.

The cost of the carpet is around $14,000, and Agee is working with a representative from Shaw.

The pool liner will likely have to be bid out to follow the state bid law; however, there is a possibility it may be on the state bid list.

The City Council unanimously agreed to fund the project with funding through the capital projects account.
