The Florala High School Wildcats and Straughn Tigers split games Monday night as the SHS girls won and the Florala boys team won in a county contest.

Girl’s game:

Straughn – 50

Florala – 44

“I think our girls played well tonight in spurts,” SHS head coach Bradley Stephens said. “We still aren’t putting together a complete game. We will play really well the first quarter and then second quarter we just die off. Then third quarter we would play OK then in the beginning of the fourth quarter we started slacking off. I’m just waiting on them to buy in for four quarters. It’s coming, we just have to start seeing it. We did play well though tonight. We did what we had to do to get the win.”

FHS head coach David Bass said they still have a lot of work to do.

“I think we played OK tonight,” Bass said. “We still have a lot of basketball to work on. Going into the  Christmas tournament this week, we are just trying to gain wins. We started out tonight on a four game winning streak and then lost tonight. So, we are just trying to get back on a winning train.”

Allie and Kelsey Kelley led the scoring effort for the Lady Wildcats with 17 points.

Boys game:

Florala – 60

Straughn -43

Despite a slow start, the Florala Wildcats held on to defeat the Straughn High School Tigers 60-43 on Monday night.

The Tigers took an early 13-1 lead in the first quarter, but by the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats fought their way back 16-14.

Once the Wildcats took the lead with 5:25 left in the half, they never looked back, winning the game 60-43.

“The first quarter was just bad,” FHS head coach Troy Turman said. “We were just lethargic and didn’t seem like we were ready to play, but we got motivated and picked things up. We outscored them in the second quarter and kind of took control of the game. I just feel like the whole game was just rough from the get-go. Once our guys settled into it, we played a lot better and when the shots started falling, we started playing a lot better. We’ve got to just improve and do a better job of taking care of the basketball, keeping our composure and playing as a team.”

SHS head coach Trevor Driver said every game is a process to get better.

“We got better tonight as far as extending the lead early in the game,” Driver said. “Now, we have to work on getting that early lead and fighting to keep it the entire game. This game was just another notch in our belt of experience. As far as the performance of my guys, I couldn’t have asked them to do any better this season so far. Game in and game out, their maturity is at a high level and I couldn’t ask anything more of them.”

Rashaad Coleman led the scoring effort for the Wildcats with 20 points.

Anthone Stone had 14 and Mekhi James had 11.
