After a routine stop on Tue., Jan., 7, an Andalusia man is in custody for throwing an illegal substance out of his car window and eluding law enforcement.

Covington County Sheriff Turman said during the routine stop, Zykristan Daniels attempted to elude law enforcement and a car accident happened as law enforcement tried to catch him.

“Deputy Jonathon Pitts attempted to stop a black Pontiac G6 car near Watson Street in Daniels turned off the Court Square onto East Three Notch Street where Captain Paul Dean (Andalusia Police Department) had set up a roadblock,” Turman said. “Daniels “dynamited” his brakes. Pitts was unable to stop in the distance given and struck the rear of Daniels’s vehicle. Daniels ran from the scene where shortly Deputy Pitts was able to overtake him and effect the arrest. The airbag deployed in the deputy vehicle and he is at Andalusia Health right now, just to make sure that everything is OK.”

Turman said he does not know the exact illegal substance thrown from the window of the car, but he said there is an investigation to find out.

“Deputy Pitts has been taken to the Andalusia Hospital complaining of pain from the deployment of the airbags from his patrol car,” Turman said. “Pitts is expected to be released soon.”

Daniels has been charged with felony attempting to elude the police, possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and numerous traffic violations.
