Andalusia Elementary School second grader Blane Clairmont has a message for everyone — you can make a mask with only a few household items and you don’t need a sewing machine.

In his video on Facebook “How to make a medical mask without a sewing machine” he shares the materials he uses and gives instructions step by step on making masks.

Blane’s mother, Amanda Clairmont said they are a creative family and that Blane loves to do projects.

“The school did a ‘share what  you know challenge,’ so he decided to make a video out of it.  We only had worksheets so we thought that making that video would be good information to share with the community,” Clairmont said.

“Blane got interested in sewing because of his grandmother. Blane’s grandmother sews and does different projects for everyone. She has been sewing masks for free for everyone since the COVID-19 outbreak started,” Clairmont said.

“We started gathering up supplies and used some things from Walmart then we got it down. The ones we made without the sewing machine with the liquid stitch and paperclips,” Amanda Clairmont said.

“Medical Masks without sewing machines with the use of household items has been something that Blane and I have enjoyed doing together. We also gave the ones we have made so far. We gave them to the teachers working hard passing out packages of school materials to students and parents at Andalusia Elementary School,” Clairmont said. “Last night my mom met me with my sewing machine. I made with the sewing machine six of them and gave them to the schools for the handouts. Making them without using the sewing machines was easier than making them with the sewing machine,” Clairmont said.
