The Covington County tax sale is to be held on Tuesday, May 19, at 10 a.m. on the courthouse steps.

“We usually have it [the tax sale] in a smaller courtroom, but we felt that having it outside would be safer,” said George “Chuck” Patterson, Covington County revenue commissioner. “We will ask people to observe the six feet rule during the sale.”

“People usually come by the office around 8 a.m. to sign in so we can see who is at the auction,” said Patterson.

Of the beginning amount of $12.3 million in property taxes owed, in Covington County, it now lacks an estimated $50,000.

“That’s only 0.004 percent left,” said Patterson. “It [the amount] is pretty normal. It’s what it’s done for the past three years. Sometimes if the economy is really good, it’ll be less, but not right now.”

The revenue commissioner’s office had two property appraisers out this week, posting notices on doors of properties with delinquent property taxes.

“There’s still unpaid property taxes and we want to get the word out so people can pay before the tax sale,” said Patterson.
