51 businesses in Covington County have benefited from the government’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP.)

The government this week released the names of the businesses that got loans of at least $150,000.

The program was set up to help save jobs and small businesses due to the loss of business from the lockdown to combat the coronavirus.

The money from these loans can only be used for paying employee salaries, paying mortgage or rent, and for utilities. If used correctly, the loans can be forgiven, meaning the businesses don’t have to pay them back.

The vast majority of the PPP loans, around 85 percent, were for amounts less than that. The average amount for all loans in the U.S. was around $100,000.

The government released some data for businesses that got less than $150,000, but not the names of the businesses. In Alabama, nearly 58,000 businesses got loans of less than $150,000, totaling nearly $2 billion. According to data from the Small Business Administration, those smaller loans helped retain more than 264,000 jobs in Alabama.
