After months of preparation, Andalusia High School rising senior Ada Short has achieved her goal of becoming the new 2021 Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) of Covington County.

Short described her experience in the competition and upcoming opportunities as memorable.

“It was great,” Short said. “I made so many great friends and met so many awesome girls from around the county. It was a great week.”

Preparing for DYW was a long yet rewarding process, according to Short.

“I began preparing for DYW a few months ago. I started working on interview prep and fitness. It was fun.”

Winning was a goal that Short made years before she was able to participate in the competition.

“It was so exciting,” Short said. “I have been going to DYW since I was a little girl so it had always been a dream of mine to participate, so it felt great to win.”

Short is a rising Senior at Andalusia High School with big plans for the upcoming year.

“I’m going to be a majorette this year and I will also be participating in the state DYW program in Montgomery in January,” Short said. “I’m definitely looking forward to the state program. I’ve heard great things about it.”

Short said she is excited about the opportunities she has coming up.

“I will be going to all of the elementary schools in the county and I will also be at the domino tournament,” Short said. “There are more events, but I don’t know of them all yet.”

After she graduates from AHS, Short plans to use her DYW scholarship to attend college at Auburn University to study biomedical science.
