Sunday around noon a group of firefighters gathered at Keahey Funeral Home to pay tribute to one of their own.

Buck Creek Fire Chief Robert Morris passed away on Wednesday at Andalusia Health.

He was 70.

The hearse carrying Morris to South Church of God was escorted by several fire trucks down Stanley Avenue to East Three Notch Street then to the bypass and on to the Red Level church.

Morris was dedicated to the Buck Creek Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years and was a devoted member of South Church of God for more than 50 years, where he served as the church clerk.

His funeral was held at 1 p.m., at the church.

The Rev. Glenn Vaughn preached Morris’ funeral.

Said that the Church was Morris’s heart and his first love.

Vaughn said that Morris is going to be missed, but that most didn’t have an idea of all of the things that Morris did for South Church of God.

“He was a worker. Praise God,” Vaughn said.

Morris was saved and joined South Church of God in 1967.

“That’s a long, long time,” he said. “I can say honestly, he was not just a member, he was active. This was his heart. He worked for what was best for this church.”

Morris did a lot of work for the church and the surrounding community, Vaughn said.

Vaughn said he and Morris has a lot of good times, including working together at a furniture store.

“He was a man you could trust,” he said. “He was such a great guy.”

Vaughn said he was as good of a clerk as he had ever worked with.

Morris led the annual Boston Butt cooking and he was known for cooking some delicious ones.

Vaughn recalled a time when he got Morris to ride with him to Virginia Beach and back.

He said that Morris kept talking “90-to-nothing.”

“Robert Morris is not dull,” he said. “I mean he can keep a conversation. I am going to miss him. He was more than a friend.”

Left to cherish his memories, daughter and son-in-law, Lynn Morris Bush (Rev. Michael Bush) of Red Level; son-in-law Kenny Shivers of Flomaton; grandchildren, Dustin Bush, Joshua Bush, Garrett Bush, and Nikolas Shivers; sisters, Bobbie Turman, Bessie Williamson, and his twin sister Carrie Williamson and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are John Wesley Williamson, Terry Williamson, Keith Williamson, Gerard Williamson, Lamar Williamson, Stacey Williamson, David Morris, Larry Turman, and Joey Turman.
