The Opp High School Bobcats varsity football team (1-0) used a huge throwing game to beat Geneva High School Friday night 67-14.

“Obviously when you win like that, you’ve got a lot of things to be excited about,” Head coach Brett Hill said. “I thought we did a good job of throwing the ball and we distributed it very well. I thought our quarterback did a fantastic job and our offensive line did a good job of giving him time.”

What Hill said he was most pleased about with the game was his defense creating scoring opportunities.

“In the second half, our defense created some turnovers and even scored themselves,” Hill said. “We really didn’t have any special teams blunders either. The only thing I would like to see is to see a little more consistency on PATs. Overall, it was a good night for offense, defense and special teams.”

Looking to next week, Hill said it’s the little fundamentals that need work.

“We know that we have little things fundamentally that we need to improve on,” Hill said. “We know that we are going to have our hands full next week, because we are going to have Elba, who just won 50-0 tonight. We know that they are going to have a lot of speed and are going to be well-coached. I won’t know how exactly to attack their defense, but we will adjust and prepare for it this week. We just want to make sure that we are crisper, have quick reads, our protections carried and that we are hitting the hot routes on all sides of the ball. We do have to be able to run the ball a little more consistently. Defensively, we have got to win that line of scrimmage and we have to not let them eat the clock.”

Terry Davis led the rushing effort for the Bobcats with six rushes for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback, Hal Smithart, was 17 of 21 for 323 yards and six touchdowns all in the first half.

Curt Zorn led receiving with three catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. Lane Ballard had 4 catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. Brady James had one catch for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Zaccheaus Lindsey had a 104-yard interception return for a touchdown and broke the school record.

The Bobcats face Elba next week at 7 p.m.
