The Covington County Quilt Guild has announced they will be postponing their biennial quilt show scheduled for February 2021 due to COVID – 19.  Teresa Nelson, the guild president said the decision was unanimous among the members.

The guild makes a quilt for each show to raise money for a local charity.  Past recipients have included Pilots for Christ, Crossover Ministries for Women, Habitat for Humanity, and Bethesda House.  This year there are two local organizations, Cancer Freeze and Blue Lake Camp.

Cancer Freeze started in 2007 and is a Non-Profit fundraising event held each year on the first Saturday in February at Lake Jackson in Florala, Alabama.  Their website states:” Our mission is to provide financial and emotional support to chosen individuals from South Alabama or Northwest Florida who are battling cancer by holding fundraising events throughout the year.”  They have provided much needed financial assistance to almost fifty people over the years through donations and volunteers who provide time, energy, and equipment for this worthy and much appreciated cause.  More information can be found at their website www.cancerfreeze.org.

The second organization, Blue Lake Camp located in the Conecuh National Forest South West of Andalusia has been hit hard by the Corona Virus, having to furlough most of the employees.  In the past sixty-eight years, Blue Lake has been a first summer job for many local teenagers in the kitchen, as life guards, housekeeping and maintenance or as counselors.  According to their website www.bluelakecamp.com, their mission statement is: “Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world while connecting people to Gods Creation”.  Serving the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church they also have groups from all denominations and various groups of hobbyists including quilters, scrapbookers, and painters participate in weekend or week long activities.   They host family reunions, church retreats, retired clergy gatherings, an annual Christian Writers Seminar, and so much more.  The eight-week summer camp season has led so many campers and counselors to a path of service on various levels, some have gone on to be ordained clergy and ministers of music.  Due to the Corona Virus, there was no Summer Season and most of the retreats cancelled.

The quilt has been made and the guild will be selecting the winner on the original date of February 20, 2021.  It is a King Size quilt made of thirty-six Log Cabin squares arranged in a diamond configuration.  The fabrics are reminiscent of traditional 1930’s fabrics and was quilted with the Baptist Fan pattern.
