Despite the COVID-19 virus threat, the Andalusia Lions and many volunteers hosted another successful Physically Challenged Deer Hunt.

Ten participants from as far away as Indiana, South Florida, and New York thoroughly enjoyed the weekend of deer hunting and camaraderie.

“The weather was great, and a total of nine deer, six bucks and three doe, were harvested and cleaned for the hunters to bring home,” Organizer Dirk Price said. “The hunters included five who were in wheelchairs, two that are totally blind, one deaf man, a young local boy with a serious eating disorder, and a disabled veteran with extreme PTSD.”

Nine local landowners opened their properties to hunt on. Many volunteers helped with everything from assisting with the hunter’s needs to serving the meals.

“The City of Andalusia let us use the Will Coleman Recreation Center for the gatherings,” Price said. “The local Alabama conservation officers came to answer any questions about game laws. All of the participants received nice gift bags of donated items.”

The Andalusia Lions Club provided the meals, hunting licenses, and hotel rooms for those who came from out of town.

Tables full of donated items were given to attendees as door prizes, and several were raffled.

“All of the effort that goes into this event cannot be listed here,” Price said. “What makes it all worth it is to see how everyone pitches in to provide a memorable weekend for those who, by themselves, could not get out to enjoy Alabama outdoors. Many new friendships are born. Those with physical challenges have built their self-confidence, and the volunteers feel a sense of accomplishment. Personally, I am grateful to everyone who has given so much to this event. The experience is well worth the effort, and we all look forward to next year.”
