The Covington County Commission handled some bid matters and heard a report on local road projects during a short meeting Tuesday.

Commissioners voted unanimously on a series of bid-related items, including a request for the Public Works Department to utilize state bids for paint from a local supplier and the emergency purchase of tires from Andalusia Tire Company.

The commission also approved bids for three different tire types. One of the low bids came from Southern Tire Mart of Atmore in supplying retread tires. The other two bids — one for tubeless tires and another for mounted grader tire — were awarded to Andalusia Tire.

The county is also looking to dispose of outdated electronics. The items will be listed as a single lot on govdeals.com for seven days. If the items do not sell they will be disposed of by recycling.

County Engineer Lynn Ralls provided an update on several projects across the county.

A resurfacing project is nearing completion on County Road 85, from Parr Road to Hwy. 331, in District 1. The project is funded through the Rebuild Alabama Act. “There is still some work to do, but majority of it is done,” Ralls said.

County crews are also working on widening and leveling CR 89. Ralls said one the current phase of the project is completed, work there will be suspended until March or April in preparation for a triple surfacing treatment.

Work is also underway on Smokehouse Road where part of the road has been washed out. Ralls said a crew was there Tuesday to remove a culvert. He said work is limited presently due to the wet conditions. “As soon as it dries out, we are going to hit it hard,” he said.

The county is waiting for archeological work to begin for a project on CR 107.

Some county workers helped state crews who begun litter pickup, starting along Hwy. 29. “It was very bad, it is a problem across the entire county,” Ralls said.
