Lady Bobcats win area championship over New Brockton

Even though the Opp High School Lady Bobcats gave up four runs in the third inning, they still defeated New Brockton 9-5 on Thursday.

The offensive onslaught by New Brockton was led by Madison Meeks, Kennedy Hussey, and Shelby Hobbs, who each had RBIs in the inning.

The Lady Bobcats got on the board in the first inning. Opp scored one run when Amaya Womack doubled.

After New Brockton scored one run in the top of the sixth, The Lady Bobcats answered with one of their own. New Brockton scored when an error scored one run for New Brockton. Opp then answered when Braya Hodges singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

The Lady Bobcats pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. In the third, Hodges singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run and Emily Mitchell singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.

Caroline Courson pitched The Lady Bobcats to victory. Courson went three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking zero. Hodges and Reese Cauley entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

OHS racked up 13 hits in the game. Hodges, Mitchell, and Womack all managed multiple hits for Bobcats. Mitchell and Hodges each collected three hits to lead The Lady Bobcats.

New Brockton scattered nine hits in the game. Lizzy Everts and Jordyn Thornton each had multiple hits for New Brockton. Everts led New Brockton with three hits in four at bats.

This is the first area title for Opp since 2018. Their record, 36 wins, ties 2013 team for most wins all time in a single season.
