A suspect has been arrested and faces assault charges after the stabbing of a Covington County Department of Human Resources employee on Monday.

Jacob Gillespie, 21, of Andalusia is being charged with second degree assault and is being held at the Covington County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Andalusia Police Department Chief Paul Hudson said officers were dispatched to the DHR facility on MLK Drive at approximately 10 a.m.

“Officers arrived and made contact with the victim, who had one stab wound,” Hudson said. “She was able to identify Gillespie as the suspect. Officers were able to obtain a clothing description of the subject and conducted a search of the area.”

Law enforcement officials began searching for the Gillespie who was last seen exiting the DHR building and running into a wooded area behind the office. He was taken into custody at Ann Street and Faye Street without further incident.

The DHR employee was transported to Andalusia Health to be treated.

Hudson thanked the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for their assistance in apprehending Gillespie.

Due to the proximity to LBW Community College, APD notified college officials so they could follow appropriate safety protocols.
