NWS confirms tornado touched down in Covington

The National Weather Service confirmed on Tuesday that a tornado was spawned by Tropical Storm Claudette as it made its way across Covington County on Saturday.

According to reports, a storm survey team found damage consistent with an EF-0 tornado in Covington County. It touched down at approximately 1:10 p.m. about 7 miles northwest of Florala, south of North Creek Road.

It was reportedly on the ground for about 2 minutes, covering .6 miles and a path width of 25 yards.

The weather service said the Covington County tornado had top winds of about 80 miles per hour.

No injuries were reported from the storm in Covington County, but it did bring down limbs and smaller trees.

In Escambia and Conecuh counties, an EF-2 tornado caused at least 20 injuries and did extensive damage.
