For the 14th consecutive year, the Alabama High School Athletic Association Sportsmanship Program has announced a list of schools with no ejections and no fines.

There were a total of 131 high schools recognized for this achievement in the 2020-21 school year. Among those are two from Covington County.

Florala High School was named one of 30 schools in Class 1A.

“I think this award is always indicative to where you are in your athletic program,” said FHS Principal Max Whittaker. “This award is based on the discipline of your student-athletes and coaches. Players tend to follow the example that is set before them. I am very pleased that we are being honored for our sportsmanship. I have never been a part of a school with a successful athletic program that didn’t have discipline and accountability.”

Straughn High School was named one of 22 schools in Class 4A.

SHS Principal Matt Cobb said, “I’m very proud of all our coaches and players for accomplishing this. This is a great thing to be recognized for. Character is a big emphasis for us and is a large part of what we are trying to teach our young people and athletes at Straughn. We have a great group of coaches and athletes here, and all the credit for this honor goes to them.”

Schools receiving this distinction will be recognized at the AHSAA Sportsmanship Luncheon on Friday, July 23. The event will be held at the Renaissance Hotel and Montgomery Convention Center.
