Some early mistakes helped pave the way to an early deficit for the Andalusia Bulldogs as they fell to Fairhope Friday, 28-0.

AHS Head Coach Trent Taylor said his team made too many mistakes against a good team.

“If something could go wrong it did and there’s no more room for that. We had some bad things happen, but we just have to go back to work,” Taylor said.

Fairhope put consecutive scores on the board early in the game, including a touchdown that came after recovering a bad snap at the 3-yard line, giving them a 14-0 lead with 9:24 remaining in the first.

Another bad snap on an Andalusia punt attempt resulted in a safety for Fairhope, making the score 16-0.

Fairhope was marching downfield after the free kick, but the Andalusia defense stiffened and a 45-yard field goal attempt was no good.

The Bulldogs took control and on second down Ayden Amis found Bailey Faulkner for a 28-yard gain to midfield. But, the drive ended after a series of miscues that backed Andalusia all the way to their own 24-yard line, leading to a punt, which backed Fairhope up to their own 17 following a good special teams tackle by Kaden Denson.

Later in the second quarter, after a good punt, Andalusia found themselves backed up at their own 7-yard line. The Pirates defense swarmed the Bulldog running game, backing them up and on third-and-16 recorded a 1-yard loss for a safety to make the score 18-0 with 4:48 to go in the half.

After the free kick, Fairhope marched 68 yards for a touchdown to make the score 25-0 at the half.

Fairhope added to its lead late in the third quarter when Luke Freer hit a 27-yard field goal, to increase the Pirate lead to 28-0.

The Bulldogs got the fourth quarter off to a good start with a 21-yard pass completion from Amis to Latimer. A pass on third down to Latimer picked up the first down to the Bulldog 44. After a 5-yard penalty, Zavier Hamilton added a 7-yard run. On third-down-seven, J’Marion Burnett picked up the needed yardage for a first down. On another third down, Hamilton picked up 12 yards to the Pirate 22. The drive stalled at the 19 where the Bulldogs failed to convert on fourth down.

Offensively, Amis went 13-of-24 for 121 yards passing. Latimer was the leading receiver with seven receptions for 52 yards.  Burnette led the rushing attack with 43 yards.

Joseph Turner led the defense with 5 tackles followed by Michael Hart with 4.5. Zavier Hamilton and Matthew McDonald each had four tackles.

Next week, the Bulldogs will have their first home game of the season as they open region play against Rehobeth.
