Leaving her homeland in Southeast Asia was not easy, but Yvonne Sowell has embraced Andalusia with open arms and is the new marketing and communications coordinator at Andalusia Health.

Originally from Labuan, Malaysia, Sowell moved to the United States to be closer to her husband’s family and wanted to start a family of her own. Labuan is a federal territory of Malaysia, which sits to the west of the island of Borneo.

She is an April 2012 graduate of Curtin University in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, where she received a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Public Relations.

She said the deciding factor on accepting the position was the fact that Andalusia Health is the heart of Andalusia. “We are a vital part of the community. It is my absolute honor to be considered and have a place in this facility.”

Sowell’s primary responsibility will be coordinating information from LifePoint (headquarters in Brentwood, Tennessee) or Andalusia Health that goes out to the public in the form of advertisements, websites, newsletters, and press releases. “On top of that, I will also be coordinating with our local organizations to lend a hand if needed.”

Building relationships within the community and having the support of her coworkers means a lot.

“I come from a small town, so I understand the importance of a strong community bond. It is a different type of comfort to know that when your community knows you and has your back. I have come to love all of my coworkers. It is a big facility, and I intend on slowly getting to know more of everyone. I enjoy listening to their life stories and believe they all could write a book of all the things they have done and seen. I appreciate that they took the time to know me and make me feel welcomed here at Andalusia Health,” she said.

She feels like she can offer a good perspective from someone who is not from the medical or healthcare industry.

“I want to understand what is going on and look for answers. I understand a lot of the time it is an overwhelming experience from looking for a doctor to patient care and follow-ups. I want to make sure if they needed to know something, it can be looked up with materials and information easily accessible,” Sowell said.

She resides in Andalusia with her husband Adam Sowell, and they have a six-year-old son, John David.

“I am new to healthcare, and everyone in Andalusia Health and LifePoint has been very accommodating by giving me time to learn and adapt. It is also wonderful I have made lifelong friends along the way and I feel I have perhaps found my place in Andalusia.”
