The Opp basketball teams made the trip to Brundidge and opened area play with three games including a comeback win in boys’ action Tuesday.

The Bobcats salvaged the final game of the night after the Bulldogs took the first two games.

“We started off very slow, and Pike County played very well in the first half. We came out after halftime and played very well. Zack Hill is stepping up and playing some good basketball. I’m very proud of him, and we’re getting some good play out of the bench. I’m so proud of our free-throw shooting and always preach to my team how big free throws are. If we had made at least half of our free throws when we played at Straughn at the Red Level Tournament, we would have won the ballgame. We shot 11-of-14 and finished 79 percent against Pike County. The kids are playing hard. I was proud of our play in the second half and wish we could have started out that way, but it’s always good to start area with a big road win,” Head Coach Willie Edwards said.

Pike County began the game on a 12-0 run and grabbed early momentum, but Opp (9-4, 1-0 3A Area 4) fought back to make the score 12-5 after eight minutes of play. The Bobcats fell behind further and trailed 28-15 at halftime. OHS blistered PCHS with 21 points in the third and had a 41-18 second-half showing to pull off a 56-46 win in the area opener for both schools.

Jabarri Hill led Opp with 15 points and five assists in the win. Zack Hill chipped in 15 points, four steals, and four assists as Terry Davis followed with 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals. JaKanye Mount had nine rebounds for OHS. Pike County was led by Zequan Boyd and Kentarious Thomas with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

The Lady Bulldogs won 37-19 in varsity girls’ action. Vanessa Stoudemire earned eight points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bobcats (0-7, 0-1). Kyah Rouse notched 15 points for PCHS, and Taniyah Green added eight.

Pike County squeaked out a 31-30 overtime win in the junior varsity boys’ contest. Nelson Hall made a game-tying layup to send the game to overtime and finished with 12 points and five rebounds for Opp (3-4). Phillip Howard earned 14 boards in the loss.

All three teams visit New Brockton in area play Thursday, Jan. 6, and host Andalusia Friday, Jan. 7. Action is scheduled to get underway at 4:30 on both days.
