Local law enforcement identified a body that was discovered Friday morning on an area hunting ground as that of a missing 90-year-old.

According to the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, the body has been identified as Roland Kelley of Slocomb. Sheriff Blake Turman said Kelley — an Alzheimer’s patient — was reported missing on Jan. 11. His death is not believed to involve criminal activity.

“The investigation revealed that Mr. Kelley had driven into the forest on an access road where his vehicle became stuck in a large puddle. He walked on the dirt path for quite some time,” Turman said.

According to reports, the body was discovered by deer hunters on the grounds of the Last Chance Hunting Club, located south of the Onycha Community, between Opp and Florala and near the Overhead Bridge on U.S. Hwy. 331.

Turman said there is help for some local residents diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

“Dementia is terrible. My family and many others have seen the effects. The family of Mr. Kelley was diligent in his care. At times, dementia/Alzheimer’s patients will become lost.
