Mr. R.D. Owens Jr. died at his home in Andalusia on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. He was 74 years old.

He is survived by his wife Sandra after 43 years of marriage. He was loved by many friends and family members. His funeral will be Saturday, April 23, 11 a.m., with visitation one prior to the service at Foreman Brown-Service Funeral Home in Andalusia. Burial will be in the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.

He graduated from Red Level High School May 28, 1965. After high school, he joined the Navy and served from 1967 to 1970 during the Vietnam War, where he was commended for his outstanding performance of duty during combat operations. He was honorably discharged on November 7, 1972. He was a member of the American Legion. He worked at Shorewood Packaging for 33 years where he met many friends; he later worked and retired from the Covington County courthouse maintenance department. He was an avid Alabama football fan. He also liked baseball and basketball. R.D. loved children and never failed to speak to them when he saw them with their parents. He coached Little League baseball for about nine years and had several winning teams.

He was preceded in death by his parents R.D. Owens Sr. and Annie Pearl Owens of Red Level. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; his sister Eula Pearl (Virgil) Nolin of Ariton, Alabama, and sister Joan Maddox of Red Level; sister-in-law Vickie Velten of Houston; brother-in-law Wayne Tompkins of Andalusia; nephews Tony Nolin of Ariton, Benjamin Velten of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Luke Velten of Houston; nieces Rhonda Lynn of Ponte Vedra, Florida, Missy Nolin of Ozark, Alabama; and many cousins.

Pallbearers will be Tony Nolin, Junior Curry, Hobson Curry, Jeff Walker, Gary King, and Mike Moore.

He was a faithful member of Mott Church of Christ, Red Level. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Mott Church of Christ Cemetery fund or charity of one’s choice.
