CCBOE recognizes local sports teams, approves additional personnel

The Covington County Board of Education recognized several sports achievements and made 13 personnel decisions including nine new hires during a regularly scheduled board meeting Tuesday, May 3.

The board recognized the following achievements in the county school’s sports programs:

  • Florala High School girls’ varsity basketball as area champions and making an appearance in the sub-region with Coach David Bass and Sharae Coleman for being selected to the 2022 All-State Second Team; Florala boys’ varsity basketball as area runner-up and making an appearance in the sub-region with Coach Troy Turman and Rayshon Coleman for being selected to the 2022 All-State Third Team
  • Pleasant Home School varsity boys’ basketball as area champions and making an appearance in the sub-region with Coaches Fred Kelley and Alan Torres; volleyball as area champions and making an appearance in the super regional with Coaches Tony Wilson and Shannon Aplin; varsity girls’ basketball as area runner-up and making an appearance in the sub-region with Coaches Tony Wilson and Kelley Garner; cross country Jackson Hawkins as an individual state qualifier with Coaches Ben Clark and Mendy Clark
  • Straughn Middle School Dhilan Patel as a participant in the Alabama State Spelling Bee
  • Straughn High School volleyball as area champions and an appearance in the super regional with Coach Deidra Burleson

Employment:

  • Britton Wood Smith as LPN at Covington County Schools effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • Kenneth D. Merrill as maintenance worker with Covington County Schools effective immediately, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • Courtney Wilson Pennington as pre-K teacher at Red Level School effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • Jennifer Susan Quinley as staff assistant at Straughn Elementary School effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • Jonathan McKinney as custodian at SMS effective immediately, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • Emily King as secretary at SHS effective immediately, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • Jonathan Trey Lowery as social science teacher at SHS, effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • April Lynn Clark as elementary teacher at W.S. Harlan Elementary School effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, pending verification of new or existing background reviews
  • Sarah Grace Kidd as elementary teacher at WSH, effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, pending verification of new or existing background reviews

Resignation:

  • Franke Isabella Ziglar as elementary teacher at RLS effective at the end of the 2021-2022 school year

Retirement:

  • Sherri A. Williams as special education teacher at SHS effective May 27, 2022

Transfer:

  • Traci Driver Bell from English language arts teacher and library media specialist at Fleeta Junior High School to English language arts teacher at SHS effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year
  • Joseph Eugene Carter from assistant principal at RLS to general science teacher at SHS effective at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year

The board set dates for two special called meetings Monday, May 9, and Tuesday, May 24. Both meetings will be held at the central office beginning at noon.
