The AHSAA state softball playoffs are in full swing this week as Andalusia, Opp, Pleasant Home, and Red Level will represent Covington County at the South Regional from May 10-13.

All four teams will be in action at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex this week. The winner and runner-up from each of four areas in 1A-6A will be placed in a pre-drawn, eight-team bracket for a double-elimination qualifying regional in each class. Each area winner will be the “home team” in the first round. A coin flip will determine the “home team” in all other rounds.

Admission is $10 per day plus a processing fee, and tickets must be purchased through AHSAA’s ticketing partner GoFan at http://gofan.co.

Andalusia (30-18) opens the 5A South Regional with LeFlore Wednesday, May 11 at 9 a.m. on Field 3 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Charles Henderson for the area title.

“I thought the team played really hard all day yesterday. We rode to the occasion and competed very well. It was a long, hot day, but our girls pitched well and played well in the field. We also hit the ball well and executed a lot of things I thought were very important. It was a very good day for us, and I was extremely proud of the girls. We look forward to going to Gulf Shores and trying to earn a berth in the state tournament in Oxford. We want to go down there and try and win it,” Head Coach Anthony Mikel said.

Opp (28-9) opens the 3A South Regional with Cottage Hill Tuesday, May 10 at 12:45 p.m. on Field 3 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Lady Bobcats won the area championship with a 10-0 rout of Pike County.

“It was a great day for the ladies. It is obvious by the scores we had great pitching all day, and at times we hit the ball very well. I have challenged the ladies all season on competing against a faceless opponent meaning it doesn’t matter who we are playing. We are going to play our style of softball and take control of the things we can control. I felt like we did a very good job of this throughout the day. This group of ladies has worked extremely hard to get to this point in their season. We are looking forward to representing Area 4 in Gulf Shores next week,” Head Coach David McVay said.

Pleasant Home (16-12-1) opens the 1A South Regional with Red Level Thursday, May 12 at 9 a.m. on Field 4 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Lady Eagles captured the area crown against rival Kinston.

“I am so proud of this team. The teams in our area are really good teams who have a ton of heart. Our girls had to overcome a lot of adversity for this area tournament win. I believe the way we had to rally around one another will help us in the long run down in Gulf Shores. This is a special group of young ladies, and I could not be more proud of them than I am,” Head Coach Jeremy Silcox said.

Red Level (18-13-1) opens the 1A South Regional with Pleasant Home Thursday, May 12 at 9 a.m. on Field 4 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Lady Tigers fell to Brantley in the area championship and finished as the area runner-up.

“We played hard and as a team. I am really proud of the way we played throughout the scorching hot day. We have to get back to work now and get ready to face some of the best teams in the state down in Gulf Shores. We are happy and excited to be making another trip down and look forward to playing some good softball,” Head Coach Dusty Lee said.

No champion will be determined in the qualifying regional. The team that remains undefeated in the winner’s bracket will qualify as the top seed for the state tournament. The team that wins the loser’s bracket will qualify as the second seed for the state tournament.
