Two people were killed in weekend crashes, including a resident of Dozier in one accident and a Georgia youth in another. Both incidents involved farming tractors.

A two-vehicle crash on Friday, May 13, claimed the life of Sherry J. Nelson, 40, of Dozier. Nelson was fatally injured when the 2008 Mercury Sable she was driving was struck by an attachment of a 2000 John Deere tractor driven by Lance H. Spears, 40, of Andalusia.

Nelson was pronounced deceased on scene.

The crash occurred on Babbie Road, approximately 5 miles northwest of the Opp city limits in Covington County.

Another two-vehicle crash occurred on Sunday, May 15, at approximately 2 p.m. and claimed the life of a youth from Jackson, Georgia. The name and age of the youth was not released by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The crash occurred when a 2021 Jeep Compass driven by Michael R. Lantrip, 61, of Covington, Georgia, was involved in a crash with the attachment of a 2012 John Deere tractor driven by James R. Waite Jr., 51, of Andalusia. The crash occurred on Alabama 189 near the 5-mile marker, approximately 5 miles east of Opp in Coffee County.

The child, one of the passengers in the Jeep Compass, was pronounced deceased on scene.

Lantrip and three other passengers, including a teenager, were injured and transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate the crashes.
