The Straughn High School Class of 1954 wanted to give back to their alma mater and recently made a donation of $1,400 to the SHS Library.

“We were giving the library $100 each time we lost one of our classmates to purchase books in memory of that person. We also bought a flagpole for the stadium once before and wanted to do something in order to carry on our legacy. This is in honor of the ones who are still living with us, and we are grateful to help the school out. We are excited to have the opportunity of giving back,” said Martha Moore Chisum.

The money will be used for a display case to be placed in the library and will house memorabilia from Straughn High School.

“It has meant so much to Straughn High School and the library to receive the donations from the graduating class of 1954. For many years, funding has been limited, and the donations from these alumni have made a tremendous difference in the available resources for students. Witnessing these Straughn graduates’ passion and dedication to the memory of their classmates as well as interest in their alma mater has been very encouraging. They are a wonderful example not only to me but to the faculty and students at Straughn High,” said Library Media Specialist Debra Turman.

Turman has served as the school’s librarian for 24 years.

“Serving as the library media specialist at Straughn High School has been a dream come true for me. I have enjoyed assisting and helping students, faculty, and teachers, and have found my role in the learning process to be very important. I have made lifelong friends through the years and am serving the children of many of the students I served in my first years at SHS.”
