Andalusia Ballet will be presenting “Summer Dances” Friday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the LBWCC Dixon Center for the Performing Arts.

“Summer Dances is the annual culmination of our summer intensive workshops. In this part of the season, we bring in guest teachers and guest dancers to work with us here in Andalusia. The Ballet is thrilled to announce that Lauren Lovette and Roman Mejia will be performing during our Summer Dances. We are honored to bring these renowned dancers from New York to our area. Guest dancers from Alabama Ballet, Huntsville Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet II, and Andalusia Ballet’s own José Soares will also be performing. We are very excited to have dancers of this caliber performing here locally,” Andalusia Ballet Artistic Director Meryane Murphy said.

The Ballet’s Summer Intensive students will also perform alongside the dancers.

Lauren Lovette is a principal ballerina who danced with the New York City Ballet from 2010 to 2021. She has created works for the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, ABT’s Studio Company, and Paul Taylor Dance Company. In 2019 she was named Artist-in-Residence for Damian Woetzel’s Vail Dance Festival. She is now the executive director of her own company, Lauren Lovette Studio, Inc., which brings awareness to classical ballet.

Roman Mejia is a dancer with the New York City Ballet. He began studying ballet when he was three years old and entered the Mejia Ballet Academy when he turned 13. He attended summer courses at the School of American Ballet, NYCB’s official school, in 2014 and 2015. He became an apprentice with NYCB and joined the company as a member of the corps de ballet in November 2017. He was featured as one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2019. He was promoted to the rank of NYCB soloist in October 2021. Mejia will be one of Vail Dance Festival’s 2022 Artists in Residence.

“People will be coming from all over to see these world-class dancers in Alabama. We are excited to be working with LBWCC and the Dixon Center for this special showing. You won’t want to miss this wonderful performance,” Murphy said.
