Shanna Davis, Vivian Willis, and Jennifer Majors represented the City of Andalusia and Andalusia City Schools at this summer’s EMPOWER energy education workshop in Destin last week.

The annual workshop provides an opportunity to learn about electric generation and distribution with a focus on energy education and fun ways to integrate it into teachers’ classrooms, using a curriculum designed for students.

PowerSouth and its member systems, including the City of Andalusia Utilities, provide the opportunity for teachers each summer.

Registration, accommodations, and mileage are provided as are excellent teaching materials to be used in the classroom.

This engaging, hands-on energy exploration workshop equips teachers to present a balanced approach to electric generation and distribution with fun, up-to-date resources, and curriculum.

The workshop has been developed by the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project. NEED’s materials and programs are an integral part of the energy education process in 65,000 classrooms nationwide.

These resources meet students’ diverse needs and learning styles and are correlated to Next Generation Science Standards, as well as Alabama and Florida standards.

Participants receive the training and materials to implement innovative hands-on energy units for their classrooms, multidisciplinary teams, and after-school programs. This includes a hands-on Science of Energy kit valued at $300.

Andalusia City Schools teachers who are interested in the 2023 workshop are asked to contact Michele Gerlach or Cathy Alexander.
