The Covington County Sheriff’s Office has released 2021 arrests statistics that led to incarcerations in the county jail.

According to the CCSO, the following agencies made arrests in 2021 that led to a total of 2,180 inmates housed in the county jail:

Covington County Sheriff’s Office, 1057; Andalusia Police Department, 345; Opp Police Department, 175; Florala Police Department, 168; Covington County District Attorney, 138; Drug Task Force, 92; Alabama Pardons and Parole, 83; Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, 73; River Falls Police Department, 31; Red Level Police Department, 10; Lockhart Police Department, 4; and U.S. Marshalls, 4.

Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman said that, at full staff, the jail has 27 officers. Currently, the jail is six officers short of full staff.

“The Corrections Department of the CCSO works diligently to provide the care, custody, and safety for the inmates. The jail is a city within a city, only we house inmates. From transporting inmates to court, doctors’ appointments, picking up inmates from all over the country, we do a lot with very little. Most inmates keep to themselves and are not much trouble, but some are quite a different story. These officers do an outstanding job keeping the jail safe and clean. For a corrections officer to be successful, they must enforce the rules of the jail, monitor inmates closely, and be ready to remedy bad situations. They must possess the ability to defend themselves and the inmates,” Turman said.

The sheriff added his thanks to the officers involved at the jail. “Thank you to all our Corrections Officers for the fine job they do. Also, thank you to all our ‘go get-em’ officers who ensure that justice is served and that our communities are kept safe.”
