The Covington County Revenue Commissioner and staff project $13.3 million dollars to be disbursed to all entities for the 2022 tax year. This is an increase of 11 percent from 2021.

The increase in taxes is calculated based on the State of Alabama mandated reappraisal of property in Covington County, as well as a state sale ratio study for sales occurring in Covington County during 2021. Reappraisal of values occurs every four years per the State of Alabama. Trending sale ratio studies are done annually by the State of Alabama to ensure appraised values stay within a specified range of real estate sales in each area.

Covington County’s annual property tax notices will be mailed Oct. 1, 2022. Property tax payments can be made Oct. 1, 2022, through Dec. 31, 2022, to avoid penalties and fees. Payment should be made through the U.S. Postal Service or online at www.covcounty.com, as well as the courthouse office. There is a 2.35 percent fee for all credit/debit card transactions. No payments can be made prior to Oct. 1 each year.

Residents who are receiving the “Over 65” Homestead exemptions can expect their applications in the mail the first week of October. Other residents who may be eligible for this exemption, may inquire at the assessment windows inside the courthouse office. Any property owner who will be 65 as of Oct. 1, 2022, may apply to have this exemption added for the next tax year. These applications must be completed and returned to the Revenue Commissioner’s office by Dec. 31, 2022, to ensure the exemption is properly applied.

Any new homeowner who wishes to add a homestead exemption to their residence must sign up for this exemption prior to Dec. 31, 2022.

Property owners who have made any changes to their deed will need to check to ensure all the exemptions they are qualified for are still in place after the change. Taxpayers may also inquire about current use for parcels of 6 acres or more where homes are present, or 5 acres or more on vacant acreage.

For information or questions contact the Revenue Commission office at 334-428-2540 or send an email to Chuck Patterson at chuck.patterson@covcounty.com.

“We look forward to serving the people of Covington County this tax season,” representatives of the office said.
