The Andalusia City Schools Board of Education approved its fiscal year 2023 budget during a meeting last week.

The budget anticipates total revenues of approximately $24.63 million with 56 percent — or $13.8 million — coming from the state. Federal revenues are budgeted at $5.3 million and $4.5 million is anticipated from local tax revenues.

In expenses, the school system budgeted equal to its revenue, at $24.63 million with over $13 million earmarked for instructional services, which includes teacher salaries. In all, instructional services account for almost 53 percent of the system’s total expenses. Another $3 million will be spent on instructional support and $2.1 million on auxiliary services.

The budget also calls for just under $1.17 million to be used for capital projects, which will include an HVAC system and roofing work at Andalusia High School and converting old cafeteria space into additional classrooms.

ACSS Chief Financial Officer Katie Odom presented the budget to the board, which was approved by unanimous vote.

Other items discussed by the board included approving the following items:

  • renewing a three-year contract for AES Principal Brenda Johnson;
  • a salary schedule change for an assistant principal;
  • a capital plan that included completing work at the AHS cafeteria, HVAC and roofing work; construction of a maintenance shop; converting old cafeteria space into classrooms; and locker room updates;
  • a personnel change for a cafeteria worker;
  • establishing a new bank account for small one-time deposits;
  • a measure to proceed with a Drug-Free Grant application;
  • entering into a contract for the Teacher Excellence and Accountability for Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) program.

The next meeting of the Andalusia Board of Education will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, 6 p.m., at the central office at 1201 C.C. Baker Ave.
