Andalusia City Hall will receive a new sound and audio system after the current system was damaged by lightning earlier this year.

The city council approved Tuesday to spend approximately $47,000 on the new system that will be an upgrade from the previous system.

Mayor Earl Johnson said the old system was installed when the building was converted to serve as city hall.

“The system we had was purchased in 2003 and was not a top-of-the-line system at that time, but it served us pretty well over the years,” Johnson said.

The mayor said the old system was destroyed by lightning strike six months ago.

An insurance claim on the equipment will help the city with the costs of the new system, providing about $23,000.

The council unanimously approved the sound system bid submitted by All Pro Integrated.

In other action:

• The council approved moving forward with a property abatement that could lead to the demolition of a property at 205 Eighth Ave. The property is deemed unsafe by the city’s building inspector.

The owner of the property indicated some work has been done with plans to continue, adding some work has been slowed due to difficulties in finding contractors for the jobs.

With passing the motion, the owner has 90 days to meet the city’s codes or the structure could be demolished.

• The council approved the purchase of safety signs to be placed on Moore Road, behind Andalusia Elementary School. The two signs will cost $8,830 with funds available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
• The council approved placing in surplus five older-model police vehicles. The vehicles are all Crown Victoria models from 2008 through 2010. The vehicles will be sold on govdeals.com.
• The council re-appointed Patricia Daniels to the Andalusia Public Library Board.

The next meeting of the city council is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4, with a work session at 5:30 p.m. and the regular meeting at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
