The Covington County Commission approved an application for an off-premises table wine license at the former Carolina Grocery location at a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The commission approved the application for a retail table wine license at Maxx Food Mart 2, which was previously known as the Carolina Grocery.

“The previous owners had a liquor license there before. I think some of the same people bought more convenience stores in the county, and they haven’t had any issues,” Dist. 2 Commissioner Michael Smith said.

The commission approved to amend the revenue commissioner’s budget by $6,000 to accommodate a temporary employee.

“We unexpectedly had an employee’s husband who became really sick. I didn’t budget any temporary labor thinking everyone would be there during the course of the year. She will be out all of October, November, and December in the assessment department. We’re really busy right now, and I need a temporary employee for three months,” Revenue Commissioner Chuck Patterson said.

The commission adopted a resolution for local assistance and tribal consistency funds under the American Rescue Plan Act.

“This is an allocation of COVID funding for $350,000 over a two-year period. It will be $175,000 of additional funds each year,” Chairman Greg White said.

The commission entered a memorandum of understanding with LBW and the Alabama Two-Year College System for improvements at the nature trail surrounding the LBW campus. “These improvements will be made in the next six months or so,” White added.

In other business:

• The commission approved the renewal of an annual contract for a traffic enforcement agreement with Enterprise State Community College as submitted.
• The commission elected to discuss a 12-month contract for an electronic monitoring system with the jail and another contract for jail commissary at a future meeting with Sheriff Blake Turman.

The next meeting of the Covington County Commission will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m., at the Covington County Administration Building. The public is invited to attend.
