Andalusia City Schools Superintendent Dr. Daniel Shakespeare provided an update to members of the school board on a current project and another that is upcoming.

Shakespeare told the board that the current project to expand the cafeteria could be completed by Jan. 5, according to the contractor on the project.

He added that the contractor has looked at the girls’ locker room at AHS to begin that process, a project that could begin after the cafeteria is completed.

In addition to the improvements to the girls’ locker room, the contractor will look into possible improvements to the restrooms in the boys’ locker room area.

The board also approved entering into a three-year agreement with Managed Methods to provide digital security to protect staff computers and other equipment from cyberattacks. The board also approved a similar agreement with Linewire to provide security for the system’s student-used 1:1 devices, including tablets and laptops.

In other matters, the board:

  • approved three personnel matters, including the resignation of Hannah Cross, music teacher; hiring of a cafeteria employee; and adding a supplement for Annie Howell for her work on the school system’s leadership team and Tyrone Ingram, an athletics strength and conditioning coach.
  • approved bonuses to be paid to coaches associated with the AHS football program winning the state championship.
  • approved a field trip for Peer Helpers to Orange Beach.
  • tabled a discussion on adding a wrap to the visitors’ and home-side aluminum bleacher sections at the football stadium. The wrap discussed would enclose those bleachers to keep people from going underneath.
  • Sammy Glover, the board’s delegate to the Alabama Association of School Board assembly provided a report on the event. Glover was also recognized by the AASB for completion of the School Board Academy, having met several requirements for that certification.

The board set its next meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 17, 6 p.m., in the conference room of the central. The public is invited to attend.
