Covington County Leadership Program installs birdhouse libraries for class project

The Covington County Leadership Program’s Class of 2022 installed three Little Birdhouse Libraries at Public Housing Authority offices in Andalusia, Opp, and Florala for their class project this year.
Members of the 2022 Covington County Leadership Program are Abbe Gwaltney of Covington Charm Boutique, Yvonne Sowell of Andalusia Health, Jonathon Parrish of CCB Bank, Beverly Barber of Opp and Florala Housing Authority, Gene Jackson of Andalusia Police Department, Cornelia Thrash of Opp Housing Authority, Tyler Patterson of Andalusia Police Department, David Carter of City of Andalusia Utilities, Tyler Wingard of Southeast Gas, Phillip McClung of Carolina Millwork and Truss, and Robbin Northey of Southern Independent Bank.
“We raised money to fund this project by selling drinks, snacks, and pizza at various events over the year including the 24th of June Masonic Celebration in Florala, July Jamz in Andalusia, and the Downtown Get Down in Opp. The community was very supportive of this project, and we also received many donations of gently used books from the Opp Public Library and others in the community. We also received donations to complete the project from Southeast Gas, Andalusia Health, and Southern Independent Bank,” Northey said.
Coordinated by Opp Chamber of Commerce Executive Administrator Kelly Brandin, the program began in 2021 with nine graduates. The 2022 class, which will graduate from the program in January, has 11 participants. Applications for the 2023 Program of Leadership class are now being accepted until Wednesday, Dec. 28. The cost is $500, typically covered by employers, unless the participant is an individual.
The nine-month program includes a variety of sessions on several topics. Those include local history, technology and cultural arts, local and county government, state government, public safety, health and human services, education and diversity, agriculture and forestry, and economic development. The program’s goal is to build leaders and create ambassadors for Covington County.
