Second and third-grade students from Covington County Schools filled the LBW Dixon Center for Performing Arts and gathered to celebrate 10 weeks of being involved in the Super Citizen Program Wednesday, Feb. 1.

These 500 students have learned their important roles in America’s future thanks to an immersive experience in civics, character, financial literacy, and social studies. In the closing piece of the program, Helping Hands (second-grade honorees) or Torch Teams (third-grade honorees), students applied those crucial lessons in the real world. They chose heroes who embodied the traits of amazing citizens and read essays from the stage before presenting them with authentic liberty replicas and liberty pins.

“This is one of the best programs to encourage and teach our students about the legacy of America and how we all contribute to its success as a community and nation. One of the messages is how special we are that America is made up of all types of people and cultures and how we can appreciate that by learning about our history and each other. It is not political at all. There is no agenda, except to teach citizenship and recognizing the people right here in our community that makes America a wonderful country,” CCS Curriculum Coordinator Nikki Guilford said.

• Joyce Mitchell by Straughn Elementary School third grade
• Elisa Mount by W.S. Harlan Elementary School third grade

The program is a part of the Liberty Learning Foundation. The event and the donation of Super Citizen teaching kits were made possible by the Covington County Community Alliance. It was sponsored by the following local organizations: Solon and Martha Dixon Foundation, Covington Electric Cooperative, Inc., PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, Alabama Department of Education, AlaTrade Foods, Alfa, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Malone Family Foundation, Regions Bank, and Screentech.
