Straughn could not overcome a rough day of shooting or 27 turnovers and fell to Pike County, 42-14, in the South 3A Girls Regional semi-finals at Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 22-8 on the year and advanced to the regional championship against Houston Academy. The Lady Tigers had their 12-game winning streak snapped and ended the season 17-9.

Amity White and Auriel Moultry each converted a layup in the opening minute and gave PCHS a 4-0 lead. Allyx Williamson put SHS on the board with a free throw at the 4:47 mark, but it was the only point SHS mustered in the frame. White scored the next seven points and knocked down a three. Moultry added two foul shots for a 13-1 lead after eight minutes.

Urriya Berry, Moultry, and Taniyah Green all found the hoop and pushed the margin to 19-1 with 5:51 remaining in the second. Blakeley Smith followed with a two-for-two showing from the charity stripe. Berry then delivered a layup as Green made the back end of two free throws. White capped the first half with a three-point play and took the score to 25-3 at the intermission.

White picked up where she left off and stroked a long three only 40 seconds into the third. Green swished a jumper before Williamson hit a free throw. Berry made the next two baskets for the Lady Bulldogs, and White used a layup. Williamson converted three additional shots at the line as the period wound down, but the Lady Tigers faced a 36-7 deficit heading to the fourth.

After layups by White, Green, and Moultry widened the lead to 42-7, PCHS would not score again the remainder of the way. Maddie Williamson made the first SHS field goal of the game with 2:53 left in the fourth. Presley Bates sank a free throw and cut the deficit to 42-10. Smith then earned a jumper and two foul shots as the contest ended.

Smith paced Straughn with six points as Williamson notched five. White was the top scorer for Pike County with 13 points. Moultry and Berry were next at eight points each and followed by Green who had seven.
