Straughn Elementary School is one of several First Class Pre-K programs across the state accepting online pre-registration applications for the 2023-2024 school year with the deadline set for Wednesday, March 15.

Enrollment is open to all children four years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2023, who are residents of Alabama. Children eligible for kindergarten are not eligible for the pre-K program. To pre-register, visit prek.alaceed.alabama.gov.

Enrollees must provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate and proof of residence through one of two methods: online at the pre-registration website or directly to the local school. Proof of residence can be either a current utility bill or a copy of a lease or mortgage.

Public school system pre-K programs may have zoning requirements that determine eligibility for attending a program. Those who have questions about the attendance zone at SES should call the school office.

There is no registration fee for First Class Pre-K programs. Upon enrollment, a child’s immunization record must be provided to the respective school. No child will be denied participation on basis of income, sex, race, color, national origin, or disability.

Acceptance into a First Class Pre-K program is strictly through a random drawing. Parents and/or guardians do not have to be present at the drawing.

This year’s random drawing will take place Friday, March 17, at noon. It will be conducted at the Covington County Board of Education at 807 CC Baker Avenue in Andalusia. Email notices of acceptance status will be sent out in mid-April.
