Over 450 fourth grade students and teachers and over 40 volunteers gathered at the Woodson Learning Center in Andalusia for the 2023 Covington County Groundwater Festival.
The students were welcomed by characters Sammy Soil and Ruby Raindrop.
The City of Andalusia Ambassadors lead the students from place to place where they enjoyed making bracelets to learn about the water cycle, exploring the enviroscape to learn about groundwater, and making a tasty treat to learn about aquifers.
Each fourth grader participated in a t-shirt design contest. The winner was Gentri Barnes from Straughn Elementary School. Each student received a t-shirt to wear during the event.
Organizers expressed their appreciation to the Covington County Cattlemen’s Association for providing lunch for volunteers as well as to all the event sponsors and volunteers for creating a fun and successful day for the students.
Sponsors included: Covington County Soil and Water Conservation District, Alabama 4-H, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Andalusia Board of Education, City of Andalusia, Covington County Board of Education, Opp Board of Education, USDA Farm Service Agency, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, Alabama Forestry Commission, Wiregrass RC&D Council, PowerSouth, Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Management Authority, Covington County Cattlemen’s Association, George Marodis, Covington Electric Cooperative, Alabama Department of Environmental Management, and the Alabama Association of Conservation Districts.
